See You In November

Those who survive "World War 2020" will have to adapt to another "new normal".  Frankly I have grown tired of adapting to what seems like new normals every few years. Suddenly the decade following 9-11 feels to me like the good old days even though everyone needed to alter their lifestyles and stop taking life in general for granted. The world changed for the worse after September 11, 2001 and no country on earth felt that devastating alarm more than the United States of America.     Let's face it, we haven't been normal since. We merely found new ways to go about our daily lives; forced to make adjustments, not all of them simple but none we couldn't manage as we told ourselves we were moving forward in a new normal. "9-11" was an act of war and so is this most recent pandemic that has so far caused a death toll that by comparison makes the number of people killed when the planes hit the the World Trade Center look like a drive-by sh...

Last One Out of The Park Turn Off The Light

In the winter of  2010 I took an early morning walk across the land that once upon a time was heavily populated by kids nearly every day regardless of the season. A place to go sledding or ice-skating in winter, or to play baseball, maybe spend hours fishing or a little time cooling off in a concrete wading pool that was only about a foot deep during the summer.     Simple pleasures during simpler times. A better place to come of age never existed anywhere in the world for many of us who grew up within walking or bike riding distance of Schiller Park!      But the years back then were short lived and in the wink of an eye we all got old. We left the park behind just as we said goodbye to nearly all of our childhood joys; most, if not all of the friends we had back then, as wel...

Dream Good Dreams

Dream good dreams, of running fast, playing hard and having lots of fun! For you will be young and strong again, the pains will be gone and you will be surrounded by friendly faces and voices that will greet you with open hearts and with the kind of love you've always known with me.     They will be glad to see you, and they will introduce you to other wonderful dogs that just like you were very special and loved by someone back here. Oh, and barking as long and as loud as you like is okay anytime you feel like it!     When you meet them they will show you where all the chew-toys are, and all of their favorite places to romp. They will take you to fields where the dirt is soft and you can dig as many holes as you want, and where there are no leashes to ever hold you back, and where you have boundless freedom to chase them or let them chase you on grass that is thicker and softer than any you ever saw, and where the water is always cool and...
